Beverley Bird Wallace

September 30, 1925 ~ August 14, 2017 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Beverley Bird Wallace age 91, died peacefully at home on Monday, August 14, 2017. Born in Dalhart, Texas, on September 30, 1925, she was the daughter of John D. and Leva Jackson Bird. After growing up in West Texas and Oklahoma, she attended the University of Texas, where she met her husband of 47 years, Robert Barnes Wallace.
They moved to Corpus Christi after Bob graduated from law school. Beverley was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, remembered and admired for her grace, kindness and faith no matter the circumstances. She kept her sparkle, good humor and sense of fun until the end.
A natural leader, Beverley remained active in local community and social organizations until the end of her life, serving as president of Las Doñas de La Corte, the Junior League of Corpus Christi, Patrons of the Order of De Pineda, La Retama Club and Chi Omega sorority.
She was a tireless advocate for the Corpus Christi Public Libraries for decades, where she chaired the building committee for La Retama Central Library and was actively involved in the design, construction, renovations and fundraising for all the branch libraries. She was passionate about the children’s areas and personally helped design and then donated the etched glass wall of under-sea life that divides the children’s and adult sections of Garcia Library.
Beverley also left a strong imprint on Las Doñas, where in 1986, as public relations chairman, she persuaded the Corpus Christi Caller-Times to publish an annual color supplement featuring the Court of the Coronation, a tradition that continues today. She remained actively involved in Las Doñas for more than 40 years.
A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Beverley served as a Sunday School teacher, and a counselor and mentor at Christian Adventure Camp.
Affectionately known as “Gran” to her six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, she was a fixture at their sporting events, programs and recitals—always interested and involved in their lives.
Beverley was preceded in death by her parents, John D. and Leva Jackson Bird; her older brother, Benjamin L. Bird, and his wife, Emily Wilson Bird; and her husband, Robert Barnes Wallace. She is survived by her three sons: Robert Barnes Wallace Jr. (Louella), Benjamin Bird Wallace (Patt) and John William Wallace (Sally), all of Corpus Christi; her six grandchildren: Emily Mae Wallace Reader (Jeff), Beverley Lorraine Wallace Holland (Bobby), Tricia Hawn Wallace, Benjamin Bird Wallace Jr. (Amy), John William Wallace Jr. and Jackson Barnes Wallace: and her eight great-grandchildren: Jeff Robert Reader, William Calvin Reader, Caleb Bryson Reader, Elizabeth Bird Holland, Robert Bourland Holland V, Benjamin Caldwell Holland, Cynthia Claire Wallace and Benjamin Bird Wallace III.
A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, August 21, at First United Methodist Church, 900 S. Shoreline. The family will receive friends afterwards in the church Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of the Corpus Christi Public Libraries, 805 Comanche, Corpus Christi, Texas, 78401 or to First United Methodist Church, 900 S. Shoreline, Corpus Christi, Texas 78401.
The family expresses its thanks, love and appreciation to all of Beverley’s caregivers, including Dr. Jonathan Martin, Shereen Bickham and nurses and staff at Mirador, especially Amy Perez, Stephanie Canales and Lauralee Vasquez.
