Carolyn Joy Koch Cutbirth was born May 20, 1935 in Houston, Texas to Joseph Andrew Lewis Koch and Gwendolyn Lorns Randolph Koch. She attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, Co as a freshman and due to her warm Texas upbringing, the next year, transferred to University of Texas, Austin where the weather was more moderate. While attending UT, Carolyn was in the Delta Gamma Women’s Sorority and she met the love of her life and her husband, William Murray Cutbirth, Jr. who was a year ahead of her. Bill, upon graduation in 1956, began attending the University Of Texas Dental School in Houston. Carolyn with 6 hours remaining before her graduation from UT followed him to Houston the following year and they were married on August 3, 1957. While Bill was in dental school, Carolyn was a social worker for the State of Texas, Harris County Juvenile Probation Office and had many exciting and rewarding tales associated with this work. After completing dental school, the couple and their first child, Monta, moved to Vandenberg Air Force Base Strategic Air Command, Lompoc, CA where Bill obtained the rank of Captain. Following Honorary discharge Bill and Carolyn and their now 2 children with baby Murray settled in Beaumont, Texas where they opened a dental practice. Their third and final child, Mance, followed. In Beaumont, Carolyn and Bill were active in the Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school. Carolyn was also active Parent out Reach, acting as Executive Director. A few years later, the couple moved to Silsbee, a satellite community, and bill opened a second dental practice. The couples were very active in their children’s lives, participating and leading many sport and academic pursuits. When their children were in college, Carolyn went back to school, completing her Bachelor’s Degree from the University Of Texas, Austin. A Master’s Degree of Social Work followed from University of Houston. Carolyn was then employed by Fresenius Medical Care North American Dialysis as a Social Worker for many years. Carolyn and Bill loved spending time at the lake in Austin especially with their kids and grandkids. They were never too busy to babysit when the grandkids were young and were well-loved by said grandkids. Carolyn loved to travel and experience new places having the opportunity to visit Russia, the Holy Land, India, Europe, and Africa. After retirement, Carolyn and Bill moved to Corpus Christ, TX to be closer to family. In Corpus, Carolyn became very involved with CASA as a court appointed special advocate for children and subsequently served on their board. Bill preceded Carolyn in death Spetember 30, 2002. Carolyn move into Mirador Retirement Community in July of 2011 as a charter member where she met many wonderful and supportive friends. Carolyn is survived by her three children; Monta Cutbirth Kennady and fiancé Rob, William Murray Cutbirth and wife Rita, Mance Andrew Cutbirth and wife Amanda as well as 11 grandchildren: Will, Cullen, Jennings, Caroline, Ryan, Bard, Sam, Charlie, Catherine, Colt and Carter. Carolyn had a special place in her heart for children also informally adopted many other kids along the way, as they always knew they could count on her for her support. These include Chris, Beth, Eric, Gwen, and Diane. Carolyn was a loving and endlessly supportive mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed. A remembrance service will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Mirador Retirement Community, Coastal Bend Hall, 5857 Timbergate Dr., Corpus Christi, Texas at 11 a.m. with reception to follow.
