The Rev. Mario A. Gutierrez, 77, of Corpus Christi, Texas departed this life on Sunday, January 7, 2018. He was born on January 19, 1940 to Juan and Guillermina Gutierrez in Monterrey, Mexico.
Rev. Gutierrez graduated from Moody Bible Institute in Wheaton, Ill. in 1960. He began his ministry in Austin, Texas and later pastored at El Aposento Alto Pentecostal Holiness Church in Dallas.
On September 30, 1962, he married the love of his life, Consuelo (Connie) Lopez. Their union spanned 55 years and they had five children, Mario I., Ventura, Enoch, Connie Marie, and Sammy C.
Rev. Gutierrez pastored at Bethel Church in Corpus Christi (1964-1971). During that time, he was ordained a Missionary of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. In 1971 he answered the call to missions in Concordia, Argentina (1971-1974) where he served as a Church Planter and Pastor establishing the now 6,000-member Vida Abundante Pentecostal Holiness Church.
His missions work continued in San Jose, Costa Rica (1975-1977) and led him to Caracas, Venezuela (1979-1982). During those years he received a Masters Degree in Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary and made ministry trips to the Philippines where he trained 1,200 ministry leaders.
During his ministry, Rev. Gutierrez traveled to 84 countries preaching the Gospel in city-wide crusades and was instrumental in planting 110 churches, training over 5,000 ministry leaders, which resulted in the establishment of 385 congregations.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; his five children, Mario (Lucy), Ventura (Melissa), Enoch (Carolina), Connie (Paul), and Sammy (Adriana); 12 grandchildren, Yaritzee, Alejandra, Estefan, Jacline, Charley, Adriana, Daniel, Elizabeth, George, Sammy, Sadie, Skyler and his only great-grandson, Noah; his sisters, Aseneth G. Flores (Sixto), Elizabeth G. Ponce (Felipe), and his brother, Hazael Gutierrez M. (Lydia). Many nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Guillermina, and his brother, Juan Gutierrez.
Visitation will be from 5 - 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel, 4357 Ocean Dr., Corpus Christi, TX 78412. A Celebration of Life service will take place at 7 p.m. that same evening. The Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be: Enoch Gutierrez, Paul Bahrs, Estefan Gutierrez, Charley Gutierrez, Daniel Gutierrez, George Bahrs, Ventura Lopez IV, and Ruben Rodriguez Jr.
