Shirley Jean Burton is now dancing the two step in heaven having passed away peacefully on December 11, 2017 at her home in Houston, Texas. She was born in Yoakum, Texas on January 16, 1937 and was the youngest of 8 children born to Sydney Alexander Neely and Jenny Roberta Neely. She grew up in Kingsville, Texas and attended Kingsville High School. She was married to her loving husband, Walter Eugene Burton (“Burt”) from 1953 until his death in 2000. When Burt was close to retiring from the Navy, they transferred to Corpus Christi and she called it home until moving to Houston in 2011.
She is survived by their two daughters and sons in law, Christina and Steven Fick, Jennifer and Rick Whitaker; her sister, Syble Sue Johnston; 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 5 siblings, and one grandson.
Her passion was dancing, especially country western dancing. She was a gifted artist and quilter. Shirley loved teaching those skills to her daughters, grandchildren and friends. She will be missed by all.
A viewing will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Seaside Funeral Home in Corpus Christi, TX. Services will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, December 15, 2017 at Seaside Reid Chapel. Burial will follow in Seaside Memorial Park.
