Sondra L. Voelkel

Sondra Lee Voelkel, age 75, passed away September 21, 2017. She was born on May 10, 1942, to Eve Wilson Wilkins and Col. James C. Wilkins in Fort Knox, Kentucky. She spent many years abroad (Netherlands), and various places in the States. She graduated high school from California in 1960. After graduation she married the love of her life, Forrest Voelkel, of 56 years on August 1, 1960.
Sondra was inspired by the medical field and held positions such as candy striper, doctor receptionist, suicide hot-line counselor, and volunteered at MHMR. Later she became the primary caregiver for her beloved parents, as well as, her husband. She had a loving and soothing touch.
Sondra was a member of Beta Sigma Phi. She held various positions in the sorority including President. She has been recognized and received numerous accolades for her activities and charity fundraisers.
Sondra enjoyed reading and swapping books with friends. She could spend hours in a bookstore or a library. She would read anything, but enjoyed a good mystery. She instilled the love of books to her grandchildren and helped each of them learn to read early in life. She also enjoyed gardening. If she wasn’t relaxing with a good book she was out in the yard caring for her plants.
Sondra was also an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church. She completed the Disciple study series and attended various bible studies, participated with Young at Heart Seniors, and served on various committees including Staff Parish Relations and Fellowship.
Sondra will be remembered for her directness, sternness and compassion. She was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
She is preceded in death by her husband: Forrest Voelkel, her parents: Col. James C. and Eve Wilkins; brother: Robert Wilkins and granddaughter: Allison N. Hope.
Sondra is survived by her sons: James Voelkel and Richard Voelkel (Marisol); daughter: Rebecca Hope (William); grandchildren: Jordan, Megan, Avery, Charlie, Amanda and Forrest, along with aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 24, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Seaside Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017 at noon at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. John Valles presiding. Interment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
Bereavement meal after interment will e held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3915 Gollihar Road.
