Obituary

Albert Lee Green, age 93, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2021. On February 25, 1928, he was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and given the name Albert Donald Thomas. At age five, he was adopted by Lee Morrow Green and Carolyn Hancock Green and given the name Albert Lee Green.

Lee grew up as an only child in San Juan, Texas, attended PSJA High School, and graduated from Kemper Military School in 1947. He graduated from Texas A&I College in Kingsville in 1951 with a Bachelor of Business Administration, served in the U.S. Air Force 1951-1955 as a non-commissioned officer (Staff Sergeant) during the Korean War, and followed in his father’s footsteps into the banking business. He married Joan Burris on August 31, 1950, and they had two sons. Lee’s banking career included Jefferson S&L of McAllen, Kingsville First S&L, First National S&L and other banking institutions in Corpus Christi prior to retiring from Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), formerly Republic Bank of New York.

Lee was a caring person with many interests which allowed him to proudly serve his community. Lee was Captain of the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Posse and president-elect of the McAllen Rotary Club prior to moving to Kingsville in 1964 and to Corpus Christi in 1965. He then led many initiatives in the Boy Scouts of America program at Troop 224 and while serving in various leadership and executive positions over decades for the Gulf Coast Council, BSA. He was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, served on Wood Badge training staff, and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in 1989. He was proud to have two sons and two grandsons earn the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a mentor to many. Lee was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Corpus Christi. After the death of Joan, Lee married Verna Graham Edgemon in 1998, moved back to the Rio Grande Valley, entered First Baptist Church in Weslaco, and was ordained a deacon in 2009. He was a pilgrim on Journey to Damascus #62.
Lee will be remembered for his gracious hospitality as he never knew a stranger, his quick-wit sense of humor, and his love for cars, horseback riding with Joan, catching a Broadway show, cooking, fishing and camping … and eating chocolate ice cream. Lee greeted others with a hearty hug or handshake.
He always treated others with courtesy and respect, and expressed his appreciation and gratitude.

Lee is preceded in death by his wife and loving mother of his children, Joan Burris Green; and his second wife, Verna Graham Edgemon Green.

He is survived by his sons, Lee Morrow Green II (Marcia) and William Jennings Green (Lori); five grandchildren, Erin Green, Kellie Green (Matthew) Fox, Bradley (Lori) Green, Jill Green, and Russell (Macy) Green; and five great-grandchildren, Blaine Green, Garrett Green, Hayes Green, Grace Green, and Archer Fox. Lee also leaves behind his community of friends at John Knox Village, where he lived for the past 14 years. Our warm and heartfelt gratitude go to his family in Personal Care, especially Andi Rodriguez, Jennifer Ayala, Melissa Molina, Bianca Rodriguez and Bianca Trevino, who lovingly assisted him during his memory-challenged last four years.

Pallbearers: Lee Morrow Green II, Bradley Green, Russell Green, Eric Moede, Tom Wintermute and Jim Collins.
