August Francis Uehlinger, age 88, passed away at his son's home early Monday morning December 3, 2018. August or “Boochie” as his family called him, was born in Corpus Christi on December 26, 1929 to his parents, Cecil Uehlinger and Marion Robinson Uehlinger who were early pioneers of Corpus Christi. Marion was the Nueces County Clerk for many years and August’s grandfather Frank Robinson, was a Texas Ranger.
August graduated from Corpus Christi Academy where he excelled in academics and sports; he was the football team quarterback and led his team to the state championship his junior year.
August was employed at Pontiac Refinery when he was 18 years old, which became Champlin and then Citgo. His moral compass served him well as he eventually became the number three man in the plant. He retired in 1991 at the age of 62, after 44 years of service: at the time of his retirement, he was the longest tenured employee of the corporation.
In his retirement years August enjoyed traveling in his 5th wheel trailer all over the country. His favorite trip was when he traveled for 6 weeks up the east coast, then over to Yellowstone and back home. He loved to fish and spent many weekends competing in Bass Tournaments all over the state of Texas.
August was an avid bowler, carrying a 209 average and bowled until he was 78. He qualified for the bowling team at Citgo (a Venezuelan company) which allowed him to compete in the Venezuelan Olympics; he always said that was one of his biggest thrills and was honored to carry the flag and march in the opening ceremony.
August will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who was always available to them. He loved the outdoors and spent two weeks every summer camping at Garner State Park where his children could swim, fish, horseback ride, mountain climb and have fun being kids.
August was preceded in death by: his father and his mother, his sister "Sister Teresita", brother Cecil (Manzie), sister Marion T. Pace, his wife of 39 years Janet Bigler Avery Uehlinger, youngest son Christopher Uehlinger, and wife of 14 years, Jean Perkins Uehlinger.
August is survived by his children: Marjory (Jim) Chadwick of Plano, Texas, August “Bud” (Machelle) Uehlinger Jr., of San Marcos, Texas and Joyce Hoffmann Pouncy of Bellville, Texas. His stepsons Larry (Linda) Avery of Illinois. Randy Avery of Illinois and Greg (Alma) Avery of Corpus Christi; and sisters Julia (Terry) Johns of Corpus Christi and Eleanor Danner of Sildell, LA. August was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren
Pallbearers are Michael Uehlinger, Jack Uehlinger, Zach Pouncy, Clint Chadwick, Shawn Avery, and Ryan Marshall.
