Obituary

Bryan Scott Miller passed away unexpectedly on June 12, 2021 as the result of a sudden illness. Scott was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 1, 1957 to Billy Wayne Miller and Ellen Maxine Hanson Miller, joining two other boys already in the family. After living in the “city” for his early childhood, the family moved to the “country” of the Calallen area where the boys and their father built a new home with their own hands and learned about cows, horses, and mini-bike trails, as well as snakes and scorpions.
Upon graduation from Calallen High School in 1975, he enrolled at Del Mar College and began preparing a foundation for the rest of his life. While he was interested in a business degree, music had always been an important part of his life, and he continued to develop his vocal talents through Del Mar’s School of Music while pursuing his business studies. His dream was to sing professionally in a gospel quartet, but his studies at Del Mar helped him decide that the world of business and finance should be his career choice and music should be what he loved to do. In his words, “Better to be an accomplished amateur than a starving professional.”
While at Del Mar, he met Debi. Music was the connection. She was a pianist and he needed someone to accompany for his voice lessons and performances (as well as help with his English papers). Their relationship grew and they married on August 30, 1980. Scott continued his college studies at night while working full time during the day. His hard work, dedication and commitment to being the best he could be resulted in ultimately achieving a Bachelor of Business Administration in December 1984 and a Master of Business in August 1988 from Corpus Christi State University (now Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi). The oil and gas and chemical industries were the focus of his career. He held various financial positions with Sun Oil, Champlin Petroleum and Fina until he found his ultimate career “home” with OxyChem, beginning at their Calallen facility and then moving to Ingleside for the bulk of his 30 plus years with the company. At the time of his passing, he was OxyChem’s Regional Controller for their Ingleside plants.
While he loved his work, he also fulfilled a commitment to Christ and served his church for many years as their music minister, in that “accomplished amateur” role he had decided was best, with Debi as his partner in that ministry.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents and twin sisters Earlyne and Darlyne.
He is survived by his wife, Debi; his brothers, Wayne Brooks Miller (Jean Carol) and Darrell Bruce Miller (Patricia); brother-in-law, Robert Lee Rowe (Cynthia); and the following nieces and nephew, Necia Marie Aynes (Andrew), Douglass Wayne Miller (Kristina), Sara Jean Antonetz (Nate), Brittany Diane Bennett Mancill (Daryll), Holly J’nette Wiliams (Matthew) and Brooke Ellen Coplin (Mark) and as well as four great nieces and nine great nephews.
