Carol Ann Feferman

July 17, 1943 ~ June 9, 2021 (age 77) 77 Years Old

Obituary

On June 9, 2021, Carol Feferman peacefully punched out of a life joyously well-lived. Born on July 17, 1943, the only child of Frank and Mary Androski, Carol began her feisty journey in Methuen, Massachusetts. Although raised in a Catholic household, it didn’t take. At 13, she boldly told her parents she was no longer Catholic. Instead, because she found comfort in a friend’s Jewish home and inspiration in the words of a rabbi in Andover, Carol converted to Judaism.

Coupled with her independence, Carol was a natural beauty. She once drove a friend to New Hampshire for a teenage beauty pageant. After being coerced by the organizers to enter the contest herself, she drove back to Massachusetts as the newly crowned 1960 Miss Cobbetts Pond.

After high school, Carol enrolled in the nursing program at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she lived with four other irreverent ladies and scurried around the streets of Boston on her beloved motorcycle. In 1964, Carol was set up on a blind date with a dashing young law student from Amarillo, Don Feferman. Carol was late, but always knew how to make an entrance. With curlers in her hair, she pranced into the living room, plopped herself on Don’s lap and preened, “Hi, I’m Carol!” That was enough for Don – the two were married within the year.

The US Army took the newlyweds to Virginia where Carol treated patients in the military hospital and taught others how to live life fully through tennis, golf, and frequent jaunts into the Blue Ridge Mountains. Don went to Vietnam and Carol moved to Amarillo, where she created a new dialect: sprinkled Yiddish through a Masshole accent. Despite living in Texas for 55 years, she never gave up that accent, dutifully rooting on the Celtics and Patriots all along the way.

While Carol was the peanut butter to Don’s jelly, she was also the bread. After Don accepted a stockbroker’s job in Houston, Carol didn’t love the city (put mildly). Naturally, the couple left within months. They moved to Corpus Christi, where Carol fell in love a second time. She blissfully fished, bowled, played cards, and beat a ton of people on the tennis court. She rarely lost in pool and no one took her down in ping pong. Through decades, she booked countless bets on football and basketball games – all for $1.

While Carol excelled in everything she did, it wasn’t until May 16, 1968, when she demonstrated true greatness. Through raising Mark and Kery, she showed all who bothered to notice what a mother is supposed to be: loving, loyal and present. While Carol raised only two children, she influenced so many more. The Feferman household was an 80’s version of the malt shop – kids constantly congregated in their living room, playing pool and listening to records, while Carol dished wisdom and served snacks that “starts with a stick of butter”. She spent one glorious summer as the Camp Nurse for the Greene Family Camp, treating the kids with more than medicine, forever changing their lives.

Carol was a world-class hugger, an incessant advice-giver, and the funniest person most had met. She knitted and gifted socks and hats to many lucky recipients. She created an original poncho - The Carol - tightly held by the luckiest ladies alive. Carol had a quick mind and a nimble wit, and was always armed with a dirty joke. If you were lucky, she’d throw you the middle finger – that meant she truly loved you.

Mark once introduced himself to a notoriously proper elderly woman at a Corpus party. He was asked, “Are you related to Carol Feferman?” “Yes, she’s my mother,” he replied to the stately woman. “Oh, I just love her. She tells the best dirty jokes!”

Her legacy survives through Don, her husband of 55 years, Mark, Kery, and her four grandchildren: Ryan, Max, Jonah, and Miles. Thankfully, all four have adopted Carol’s love of salty language and saltier jokes.

Carol loved hard, laughed harder, and showed us all how to enjoy life. She will be missed.
