Donald Overton Burrell was born September 2, 1928 in Mason City, Iowa to the late Overton and Chrystal Burrell. He graduated from Mason City High School in Iowa and then joined the United States Navy soon after. It was during his Navy career (circa 1954) Don met the love of his life and married her. Lillian Louise Washington was his devoted wife for 64 years. Don served a long, distinguished 33 year career in the Navy on submarines and surface ships. He retired after reaching the rank of Commander and settled in State College, PA and then later in 1992 moved Corpus Christi, Texas. In Corpus Christi, he continued his Bible study and dedicated his life to Jehovah God. He got baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, March 1, 2014 and served faithfully until his death.
Don was the oldest of 7 children, his wife Lillian, his brother James Burrell and his sister Mary Lewis preceded him in death.
He is survived by his four children, Anthony K (Toni) Burrell, Dona Burrell-Cato, Dwayne (Yvonne) Burrell, and Rhonda Burrell-King, seven grandchildren, Jonathan (Elba) Burrell, Nicole Burrell, Dylan King, Denise (Xavien) Burleson, Earl Burrell, Armon King, and Jarrell Cato, three great-grandchildren, Destiny, Ebonnie, and Nathan Burrell, four sisters Ruth Allen, Genevieve Smith, Janice Nickerson and Virginia Green as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He loved outdoor sports especially fishing. Some of his most outstanding qualities were his generosity, and his concern for others. Donald’s extraordinary love for his family was always evident. He also loved being among his Brothers and Sisters in the faith at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday March 23, 2019 at 5pm.
