Obituary

MASON, Mrs. Edith, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, May 8th, 2018.
She was born Edit Neumann in Debrecen, Hungary on September 21, 1928 to Joseph and Malvina Neumann. In her youth, she and her family suffered through the ravages of World War II and survived an Austrian labor camp in 1944 after the occupation by the Nazis. With the assistance of a family member who earlier had moved to the United States, her family emigrated to and settled in Cuba in 1946. While awaiting the processing of visas to enter the United States, she would meet her future husband, Ted Mason. After a two year courtship, they were married on February 19, 1950 in New York City. They eventually settled in Corpus Christi in 1953. Together with her husband and brother, the late George Normand, they co-owned and successfully operated the Town 'n' Country Fabric Shop retail stores throughout the city, including locations at the Shell Center, downtown on N. Chaparral, Ayers Street and Parkdale Plaza from 1953 until her husband's retirement in 1983.  She and her husband were happily married for over 62 years until her husband's passing in 2012.
Edith was a loving daughter to her parents who also survived the war, a devoted wife and a caring and supportive mother to her two children. She was a member of the B'nai Israel Synagogue. She enjoyed traveling to Europe with her husband and returned to her native Hungary to reacquaint with family members on many occasions. She became passionate about working out at the local gym in her later years. Her family and friends will miss her relaxed, good nature and positive attitude.
Edith's family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the extraordinary care, devotion and support by her loyal and tireless caregivers, who were at her side during the past 7 years, including Linda Martinez, Veronica Garcia, and Christina DeAnda.
Edith is survived by a daughter, Barbara Mason, who did everything above and beyond what a daughter could be expected to do and more to care for her mom in her final years, and her husband, Michael Horowitz, of Dallas, Texas and one son, Thomas Mason, and his wife, Olga Moreno, of Houston, Texas.
A Funeral Service for Mrs. Mason, will be conducted on Thursday, May 10, 2018, at 10:00 am at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment to follow at Seaside Memorial Park.  The family requests that any memorials be directed to Temple Beth Israel Synagogue, 4402 Saratoga Blvd., Corpus Christi, Texas.
