Fabio Moretzsohn DeCastro Junior

Dr. Fabio Moretzsohn de Castro Jr, aged 55, passed away on January 6, 2020 at his home in Corpus Christi, Texas after a yearlong battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Heather Stanton Moretzsohn de Castro and daughters Olivia Elizabeth Maluhialani Stanton Moretzsohn and Isabella Helena Kanani Stanton Moretzsohn.

Dr. Moretzsohn was born on October 19, 1964 in Sao Paolo, Brazil to Heloisa and Fabio Sr.; the second son of a family of five children. He was raised in Sao Paolo and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1987; his Master of Science degree from the University of the Ryukyus in Okinawa, Japan in 1993; and his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2003. His passion and academic research focused on shells and marine biology. It was in Okinawa that he met his wife, Heather. The two married in 1996 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and lived there until 2004 where they had their two daughters, Olivia and Isabella. The family moved to Corpus Christi in 2004 where Fabio first worked as a researcher with the Harte Research Institute (HRI) and eventually a professor at Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi (TAMUCC).

There will be two Celebration of Life services in Corpus Christi. This first will be held on Friday, February 14, 2020 at 4 pm at TAMUCC, Performing Arts Center, lobby, sponsored by TAMUCC.
The second service will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2020 at 2:30 pm at Seaside Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 4357 Ocean Drive in Corpus Christi.

Additional Celebration of Life Services will be held in March 2020 in Brazil and again in Hawaii in June 2020.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you help to fund the scholarship in Fabio’s name entitled “Dr. Fabio Moretzsohn Memorial Endowed Scholarship in Cancer Research through Marine Biology,” that will help students at TAMUCC locate more natural remedies found in marine life to cure cancer.
