Obituary

Harold Kimsey Shearer, 89, of Corpus Christi died at home in his sleep on Sunday, February 16.

He was born June 20, 1930, in Brady, Texas, to Sydney Kimsey Shearer and Jessie Mae Roark Shearer. He grew up in Mason County, Texas, where the Shearer family had lived since 1896. His mother was a former grammar school teacher in Mason, originally from Fannin County, Texas.

Harold graduated from Mason High School and earned two degrees from Texas A&M University in College Station; the first in agriculture and the second in civil engineering. He was a lieutenant in the Air Force for two years during the Korean Conflict, serving as an air traffic controller stationed in Great Falls, Montana.

In 1952, Harold married Iva Jean Armour, also a graduate of Mason High School and of Southwest Texas State Teachers College. They had three children together and lived in several towns in the United States before settling in Corpus Christi in 1969. From 1976 to 2000, he owned and operated his own civil engineering firm, Shearer Engineering. After he sold the company, he remained a part-time consultant until 2015.

Harold was an outdoorsman who loved deer hunting, fishing and observing nature. He was a hobbyist photographer and had a fine collection of arrowheads. He was known for his self-determination, loyalty to family and friends, and his colorful and witty language.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, son Steve Shearer, daughter Cindy Shearer Forbes, brother Carrol Ray Shearer, three grandsons, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

A memorial service for Harold will be held on Saturday, February 29, at 2 PM at the Seaside Funeral Home chapel.
