Welcome to the memorial page for

Horacio Oliveira Jr.

February 25, 1948 ~ November 7, 2017 (age 69) 69 Years Old
On Sunday, November 05, 2017, a bright, beautiful, and warm light was extinguished to the world. Horacio (Lacho) Oliveira, Jr., 69, went to be with the Lord that he loved so much. His devotion to the Lord was exhibited by his attendance at daily mass, either in person or by television, and he said a daily rosary.

At the age of 38, Lacho had an accident that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. Although he was able to move very little physically, he moved mountains with his love, charm, wit, humility, and courage. He was a hero and inspiration in every sense of the word, never complaining, never discouraged, and always smiling. His beloved wife, Margaret, took loving care of him after his accident, until her own death in 2013. Although his heart was broken, Lacho continued to be there for his beloved sons, Mark, Dusty, and Chuck, with the same drive that sustained him throughout his life.

Before his accident, he was an avid sportsman, hunter, rancher, and first and foremost a Marine, having served in Viet Nam. From Little League through college, he excelled in everything he tried, and he tried it all. He was All-State in football, track, and baseball at Corpus Christi Academy where he went to high school. Then he went on a football scholarship to New Mexico Highlands University. When the war in Viet Nam started, he interrupted his studies to join the United States Marine Corp, where he was a pugil stick champion and sharpshooter in boot camp. As a Lance Corporal, he served in many capacities including as an MP in DaNang, and also rescuing fallen heroes in helicopters.

After Viet Nam, he married his beloved Margaret Rodriguez, and returned to get his degree at NMHU. Upon graduation, he decided to work for HEB as a truck driver. He was the Texas Truck Rodeo Champion for 2 years, and lead a convoy of HEB drivers through treacherous mountains to Mexico City after the 1985 earthquake. His courage and compassion were equal to none.

After his accident, he continued to develop his companies, Oliveira Properties, South Texas Remolino, and 5-Olives. He had grown up in the ranching community of Ramirez, Texas, and his love for ranching carried on until his untimely death.

Everybody that knew him loved him, because he was such a good person, but those that loved him the most are his survivors: His sons, Mark (Denise), Dusty (Cecy), and Chuck Oliveira, all of Corpus Christi; his precious grandchildren, Danika and Lukas; his parents, Horacio Sr. and Delia Oliveira, his sisters, Dolores (Pete) Gonzalez, Noela Oliveira Garza, and Denise Oliveira; his sister-in-law, Belinda (Nelson) Encarnacion; his brothers-in-law, Rene (Tomasita) and Mono (Rachel) Rodriguez, and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret, his brother-in-law and best friend, Rolando Garza, and his beautiful niece, Cathy Lowe.

Special thanks go to his long-time attendants, Wally Pacheco, who was devoted to him for 22 years, Nelson Encarnacion (who is also his nephew), and Maggie Roberts.

His life light was extinguished way too soon, but his love light will shine on forever.
