Janell Bennett

February 3, 1959 ~ November 25, 2022 (age 63) 63 Years Old

Obituary

Dr. Janell Bennett went home to be with the Lord on November 25, 2022, at the age of 63. She was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas February 3, 1959.

The Sanders Family would later move to Bay City, Texas and Janell would ultimately graduate from Bay City High School in 1977. Shortly after graduation, Janell would start to work towards the goal of achieving her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. She would graduate from Del Mar College with an Associate Degree to become a Registered Nurse in 1987. In addition, she would continue her studies and achieve a Bachelor and Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi in 1998 and 2002, respectively. During this time, she would work in the healthcare setting to continue to refine her nursing skills, keeping her certifications up – to – date, and work as a professor for the Nursing Program at Del Mar College. She would not stop her hard work and achievements there and in 2011, she achieved a Doctorate Degree in Philosophy with a major in Nursing Science from Texas Women’s University. While she was working towards this prestigious achievement, she would also teach at Schreiner and Walden University.

Janell enjoyed praising God while being on the Praise Team, participating in Bible Study and in church activities at her home church of over 20 years at Corpus Christi Christian Fellowship (CCCF). Even during her almost 22-month battle with Glioblastoma Multiforme (diagnosed January 2021), she rarely missed a church service, choir rehearsal, or Bible Study and would have her loving husband drive her from her many chemotherapy and radiation appointments at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center located in Houston, Texas to make sure of that. Janell also enjoyed traveling the world with her husband and occasionally being able to attend Army / Navy Football Games to support her daughter’s Alma Mater (United States Naval Academy). There was not a football game that went by that she did not wear her Navy gear for or made sure to update her daughter on the game statistics. She was a proud Navy Mom.

Janell was a beautiful, strong, hardworking, caring, and loving mother to her only child, Ericka Shaw, and two step - children Blair Schlicher and John Bennett. She was an undoubtedly good and faithful servant to the Lord and will be sorely missed being seen faithfully praising God on the third row in church.

Janell is preceded in death by her father – Ira Lee Sanders Sr. and mother – Mattie Brownlow.

Janell is survived by her husband Ed Bennett, daughters Ericka Shaw and Blair Schlicher, and son John Bennett. In addition, her sisters Roselyn McGrew, Rotanza Pearson (Willie), Tawny Brownlow (Keon), brothers Ira Lee Sanders Jr., Jerry Sanders, Stanley Sanders, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Janell is also survived and was able to be a part of her first and only grandson’s birth, Curtis Jerome Shaw III.

Lastly, we wanted to take the time and thank the wonderful staff at Corpus Christi Medical Center Bay Area, HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Harbor Hospice Facility, Harbor Hospice In – Home Care, and Christus Spohn Corpus Christi Therapy Center. We also wanted to thank Pastor Don and Marva Leavell and the MANY CCCF Healthcare Professionals and Church Family Friends that sat with The Bennett Family during this long and sometimes hard journey at all hours of the day or night.
