John "Jack" A. McQueen

Obituary

 

John "Jack" A. McQueen passed to his Maker on May 31, 2023 at the age of 95. He was born in Middletown, CT March 21, 1928 to William N. McQueen and Florence M. McQueen.

Jack entered the Navy in 1946 and attended the Navy Technical Training Center on Ward Island in Corpus Christi, TX. Transferring to Naval Air Station in Squatum MA, he worked on electronic systems in the development of early drones as part of "SPU CAST".  After his discharge in 1948, he returned to Corpus Christi and married Thelma Louise "Happy" Hornsby. They had three children.  He began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1948 as an installer, but was recalled to the Navy and served with the Military Air Transport Service during the Korean War. Discharged again in 1952, he returned to Corpus Christi to work for Southwestern Bell. He was promoted to Chief Switchman in Alice, then Wire Chief in Brownsville and then to various jobs with the company in San Antonio. He graduated from St. Mary’s University Magna Cum Laude in 1963. He returned to Corpus Christi in 1964 as District Traffic Superintendent working in Corpus Christi through 1979 when he transferred back to San Antonio as Division Manager.

While in Corpus Christi he served 11 years on the CCISD School Board and was President in 1978-79. He was a Past President of the United Way of the Coastal Bend, a Member of the Executive Board of the Gulf Coast Council of the Boy Scouts of America and a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was a long time member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, serving as Alamo Chapter President in 1973-74. He served as Chapter Assembly Chairman for 25 years and was Association Vice President of the Telephone Pioneers of America in 1978-79.

He is preceded in death by his wife Happy and son John Stephen "Steve" McQueen. He is survived by son Scott Norman McQueen (Mary) daughter Melinda Gail McQueen and grandsons William Robert McQueen (Jaime) and Keegan Scot McQueen as well as two granddogs, Bay and Boudreaux "Bubbas".

Inurnment will be held at 2:30pm on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at Seaside Memorial Park.
