Lelia Mae Burton, age 93, passed away peacefully in her home in Port Aransas, Texas, on Monday, May 31, 2021. She was born in Hagerstown, Maryland to Aaron and Bessie Hege (deceased), and spent much of her early life in a small Mennonite farming community alongside her four sisters and two brothers. Lelia was the last surviving sibling in the Hege family.
A resident of Port Aransas for more than 30 years, Lelia was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church. She gave hugs like no other, and on any given Sunday she was likely to be asked for one from someone. It was unfortunate that illness kept her from doing one of the things she loved most.
Lelia is survived by her sons, John (Teresa) Crawford of Port Aransas, Mark (Teresa) Crawford of San Antonio, and Lloyd (April) Butler of Clear Springs, Maryland; her grandchildren, John Edward Crawford, Alyssa (Andrew) Sanders, Stephen Crawford, Elena Crawford, Azteca Henry, Marco (Cindy) Crawford, Christian Crawford, John Butler of Richland, North Carolina, Margi Utlaut of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dixie Abbott from Tampa, Florida, DeEttiea Butler from Tallahassee, Florida, Christine Butler from Clear Spring, Maryland and numerous great grandchildren. Lelia was loved by many people, and she will be missed.
The Crawford family extends a special thanks to Mary Rushing for her kindness and care of Lelia during her final months; to Mylinda, Desiree and Norma from AMED Hospice for helping us see this journey through to the end; and to William Campbell and the Frist Baptist Church of Port Aransas for reaching out in our time of grief.
Graveside services were held on Monday, June 7, 2021 at 10:00 am in Royal Palm Cemetery, Port Aransas, Texas. Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville officiated.
