Lillian Frances Speed, age 100, passed away December 25, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas. She was born June 21, 1918 to Charles and Anastasia Buckley in Eagle Pass, Texas. Lillian was the youngest of 10 children. Three of her brothers were Catholic priests with the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (O.M.I.). Her Catholic faith was a source of great comfort and strength for her entire life.
Lillian met and married Ernest W. Speed, who proposed to her via telegram. They were married in 1938 and were married for over 53 years until Ernest passed away in 1992. They were deeply devoted to one another.
Lillian and Ernest shared many adventures throughout their 53 years. She enjoyed traveling with her husband or spending time at their ranch in Orange Grove. They lived in San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Castroville TX. She made new friends wherever she went. Lillian was a talented painter who enjoyed both watercolor and oil painting. She was a devoted grandmother. You would find her playing her guitar and singing with her grandchildren or teaching them how to play poker or dominoes. On Sundays after Mass, you would find her watching her favorite team: the Dallas Cowboys.
She is survived by her five children: Patricia Boone (Michael), Ernest Speed Jr., Michael Speed (Diane), Edward Speed (Linda), and Timothy Speed (Linda). Lillian and Ernest had 14 grandchildren: Deborah Beeler, Michael Boone, Jr., Suzanne DeDore, Betsy Boone, Ernest Speed, III, Janet Church, Scott Speed, Kathleen Speed, Michael Speed, Jr., Matthew Speed, Jennifer Speed Thompson, Amy Jeter, Jonathan Speed, and Katherine Mullins and their spouses, numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, and her daughter-in-law, Rhoda Speed (Ernest), her great-granddaughter, Emily Beeler, her parents, and siblings.
A Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2018 at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. that same evening. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
