Luis Antonio “Lucho” Mackrizz, M.D., beloved husband, father, friend, and physician, died peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on June 17, at the age of 64, three days after suffering a surfing accident.
Lucho was born on June 17, 1954 in Lima, Peru to Juan Cecilio Mackrizz and Yolanda Carmela Blossiers, and spent his childhood in Chorrillos, Peru. He had two siblings, Juan and Violeta Mackrizz with whom he was extremely close. He graduated from Universidad Federico Villareal in 1980, where he received his medical degree with a specialty in internal medicine. Lucho continued his education after moving to the United States in 1996, completing a three-year residency and receiving a second degree from the University of Virginia. He spent the entirety of his medical career in Corpus Christi, TX.
In 1982, Lucho met the love of his life, Monica Guillen, and they married in 1985. They were blessed with two wonderful sons, Alonso and Nicolas Mackrizz. In 1992, the Mackrizz family moved to the United States, and, drawn by the beauty of the ocean and their love of the beach, they settled in Corpus Christi in 1999, where Lucho opened his own office for internal medicine.
Lucho was a man of many passions, and he lived life to the fullest. He was an avid outdoorsman, with particular passion for surfing, wakeboarding, wake surfing, and living the ocean life. His greatest love, though, was his family: Monica, his wife of 33 years, and his sons Alonso and Nicolas. Their extraordinarily close relationship found them traveling the world surfing, growing their family medical practice, and building a successful restaurant business. Lucho lived life for his family. His vibrant, unbounded energy and zest for life lives on throughout his vast community of family, friends, and colleagues.
Lucho was passionate about his profession as a dedicated physician, and he spent countless hours, early mornings, and late nights caring for over 3,000 patients throughout South Texas. Lucho was a renowned diagnostician, and leaves behind a legacy of endearing care. Before starting his career in the United States, Lucho worked for the Pan-American World Health Organization on a national campaign to eradicate the last known outbreak of polio among the indigenous tribes in the jungles of Peru.
Lucho was preceded in death by his parents Juan and Yolanda Mackrizz, whom he loved and missed tremendously. He is survived by his adoring family: His wife Monica Patricia Mackrizz; his siblings Juan and Violeta Mackrizz; his sons Alonso and Nicolas Mackrizz, and his many, many friends.
A visitation will be held at Seaside Funeral Home on Friday, June 22, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The Mackrizz family welcomes everyone to join a celebration of Lucho’s life on Saturday, June 23, at 1:00 p.m. at the Omni Hotel in the Corpus Christi ballroom, which will be followed by a ceremonial surfing paddle-out that evening at 6:00 p.m. at Bob Hall Pier.
