One Sunday morning, a curious and blond pixie blew through the door of Corpus Christi’s First United Methodist Church - College Age Class. Her name, Margaret Walburg.
She came armed with curiosity, questions – no answers, and a bubbling laugh. She quickly prevailed upon an art community acquaintance, Father Valentine, a Jesuit from the Minor Seminary and some of the young seminarians to help with a more scholarly approach to our curriculum.
We grew from five girls to sixteen almost overnight. By Halloween, we averaged some forty college students eager to learn, even to put in the extra study time during the week with a leadership and snacks meeting. On college holidays and summer, we came even closer to eighty active class members.
With support of her beloved husband, Wesley, and the Church staff including the Mr. Vincent Morris, she showed continuing interest and opened our hearts and minds to Christ and Christian concepts by sharing her enthusiasm, family, home and love. She believed in changing the world one person at a time. She was our very own “Tinkerbell”, always ready for adventure and learning, leading the charge with questions and special love for each. She always showed care and compassion for every student who came looking for a place to belong and serve.
Through her and this wonderful Church’s ministry, my sisters and I all found our beloved and life-long husbands, and we have had wonderful lives. And I believe that it was her gentle loving-kindness along support from her beloved Wesley, Father Valentine, and Mr. Vincent Morris that made this all possible. May God bless the memory of Margaret Walburg, and we will forever remember her dedication and love of Christ.
