Obituary

Mattie Louise Campbell Childers passed away in Arlington, Texas on January 27, 2023 at the age of 95. Mattie was born October 29, 1927 in Cedar Grove, Louisiana to Oscar Marvin Campbell and Mary Emer Haselwood. She moved with her family to South Texas in the 1930’s and after graduating from Banquete High School, she moved to Corpus Christi where she worked as a bookkeeper for several doctors.

In Corpus, Mattie lived alone with her longtime companion, her little dog, Frisky.  In her free time, Mattie enjoyed shopping, spending time with family, and embroidering everything from felt stockings to large pictures, including one of her favorites, “Man by the Sea”'. Mattie met and married Clif later in life, and they were able to do some traveling to popular destinations for a number of years before his death in 1982. Mattie and Clif enjoyed going to their vacation house on Lake Mathis where they fished for crappie and catfish and relaxed away from the big city.

Mattie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clif, eight brothers and sisters: Oscar Campbell, Fonso Campbell, John Campbell, William Mack Campbell,  Doris Kohler, Lou McCoy, Ellen Ashley, and Joyce Boggess; seven nieces and nephews:  Mary Lou Barr, Peggy Powell, Phyllis Heil, Diann McCoy, Lynn Campbell, Don Campbell, and Ernest Kohler.  She is survived by nieces Erma Reynolds, Janice Ivy, Sara Beth McMillan, Sheila Poldrack, Carroll Brown, Mary Underwood, Sherrill Bertram, Cathy Gutierrez and nephews Marvin Campbell, James Campbell, Jim McCoy, Dale McCoy, Mike Kohler, Tommy Boggess and their families.

Mattie was a strong, caring woman who helped others in her family when they needed it. She was a strong influence for her nieces and nephews and their families. She played an integral part in her nieces and nephews lives during both their childhoods and later on with their own families as they got older.
