Mike R Murray

January 13, 1942 ~ April 16, 2022 (age 80) 80 Years Old

Obituary

Michael "Mike" Robert Murray died on April 16, 2022, in Portland, Texas, after a long illness. He was 80 years old.

He is survived by his son, Robert Murray and wife Olga, and by grandchildren Lillian A. Murray and Gus Anderson DeLeon, as well as by his sister, Patricia Murray Eisenhauer, brother William Lee Murray, niece Catherine Eisenhauer, and nephews, Travis Murray, Justin Murray and Thomas Eisenhauer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sid and Rosalia Murray, and by his daughter, Anne Cecile Murray.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 13, 1942, Mike moved to Corpus Christi with his parents in 1946 when his father established the first agency in Texas selling group insurance to professional associations. Mike graduated high school in Corpus Christ from College Academy and was an Eagle Scout. He received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from The University of Texas at Austin, and a Master of Business Administration from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. While in school, he also earned the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) professional designations.

Then, he returned to Corpus Christi to join the family insurance business, which was known nationally by the slogan "Sid Murray Pays in a Hurry." He worked there, as Executive Vice President of Sales until 1984, when he bought the business.

After about 10 years, he sold the business. Mike loved hunting and fishing. As a boy and young man, he enjoyed family hunting trips in Texas, Mexico, and more distant locales like Canada's Yukon Territory, Mozambique in Africa, and near the North Pole. He was always seeking (and finding) new places to hunt or fish. But bird hunting - duck, geese, pheasant, dove and quail - was probably his favorite.

Mike was always creative and adventurous and could usually convince his friends to follow him. And early example of his leadership was in 1950 when his Dad told him and his sister to get rid of the sticker burrs in their new yard. Mike organized the neighborhood kids to help by creating a “sticker burr picking contest".

A memorial service will be held in Corpus Christi for family and friends on April 25, 2022, at 10:00 am in Reid Chapel at Seaside Memorial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to charity of your choice.

The family is deeply grateful to Cheryl Longwell and her staff at Pavilion Assisting Living in Portland, Texas, for their loving care of Mike over these past years.
