Nelda W. Myrick, age 95, passed away on February 1, 2024. She was born on January 19, 1929, to Leonard Lee and Laura Janie Smith in Stamford, Texas, the oldest of nine children. She was raised in many west Texas towns as her father followed the carpentry work. She graduated from Cisco High School in 1946 and upon graduation, she enrolled in Western Union School in Springfield Missouri. After completing her training, she was sent to Corpus Christi, Texas on her first assignment. It was in Corpus Christi that her roommate, Gladys Nesloney, introduced Nelda to her brother, Edwin Johnnie Nesloney. They were married on October 30, 1947, for 37 years before Edwin passed away on December 28, 1984.
Nelda and Edwin were blessed with two daughters, Beverly Gail and Vickie Joy. They were her pride and joy.
Nelda worked for Western Union for several years in the accounting department. Then she went on to work at Southern Petroleum Gas, Boys and Girls Club, Corpus Christi Savings and Loan and finally at Social Security Administration, always in the accounting departments. She retired from the Social Security Administration in 1996.
Nelda was a seamstress and enjoyed sewing dresses and other clothing items for herself and her daughters. Upon retirement, Nelda found many activities to keep her busy. She loved to travel and took many trips with Rockport Tours around the country. She was an avid reader and always had a book close by. In her earlier years, she loved to bowl and was on a league for several years with her daughter, Joy. Nelda was a member of a square-dancing group and spent many evenings and weekends dancing. By now she had taken up quilting, following in her mother’s footsteps. Nelda made quilts for everyone in the family including children and grandchildren, and was working on quilts for her great-grandchildren. After the family had quilts, she joined two quilting groups- one at Doctor’s Regional Hospital and First United Methodist Church, these quilts were given to many of the children in the community.
Nelda was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church when her daughters were young and later joined First United Methodist Church. She was an active member attending Wednesday night sewing group, Sunday School classes and never missing a Sunday service if she was in town. Nelda also spent a lot of time crocheting potholders and took great pride in giving them to all the family and friends. Nelda was always ready to go to any family get together regardless of the activity. She attended many school events for her grandchildren including ROTC activities, band performances and athletic events. She later attended activities for her great-grandchildren.
In 2006, Nelda attended a Cisco High School reunion and was reacquainted with her high school sweetheart, Jack Myrick. In April 2008, Nelda and Jack were married at 79 years of age. They spent 10 years together traveling much of the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska. They also went to Ireland, Costa Rica and Australia.
