Obituary

Norbert J. Sternadel passed away on January 28, 2023 at the age of 87.  He was born on August 12, 1935 in Jarrell, Texas to Joseph and Annie Strnadel.  His family lived in Cornhill, Texas for a time before moving to a farm in Mathis, Texas.  He graduated from Mathis High School in 1952. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Education in 1956 from Texas A & I College in Kingsville, Texas.

 

He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in August 1957.  He graduated from the Signal Officer Basic Course at the U.S. Army Signal School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.  After Fort Monmouth, he was assigned as a Platoon Leader to the 68th Signal Company at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.  In 1960 he joined the U. S. Army Reserve and reported to company B in Alice, Texas and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant shortly thereafter.  In 1965 he was named as Company Commander of his unit in Company B, 90th Supply and Transport Battalion in Alice, Texas.  He was honorably discharged in 1968 at the rank of Captain.

 

After graduating college, he worked a variety of jobs including teaching at Dubose Junior High in Alice, Texas as well as teaching English and other subjects to the horse racing jockeys on the King Ranch. 

 

In March of 1960 he was hired by the Celanese Chemical Company in Bishop, Texas.  He retired in August of 1997 after 37 years.  The majority of his career at Celanese was in the Safety Department.

 

He was a lifelong fisherman who spent many weekends at his cabin in Baffin Bay.  After retiring from Celanese he got to enjoy many of his other hobbies, such as, woodworking, photography, and travel.  He and Karel, his wife of 35 years, traveled to all seven continents and maintained several friendships established through their travels.  They continued to travel until her death in 2012.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents Joe & Annie Strnadel and his wife Karel Sternadel.

 

He is survived by three daughters, Carla Norman (Marc), Brenda Sternadel, & Deidra Hall, three grandchildren Kenneth Norman (Laura), Brian Hall (Natalia), and Robyn Hall, and one great grandchild, Liam Hall.

 

He is also survived by his sister Sylvia Sralla, one niece, Loretta Parker (Wayne), and their children Brandon and Brittany.
