Robert Godoy, 84, entered eternal rest on Thursday evening, March 11, 2021. He was born on October 21, 1936 in Corpus Christi, Texas and was preceded in death by his loving son, Robert, II. (Bowie). Robert married his high school sweetheart, Mary Martinez, on January 27, 1959. They had four children, Richard (Linda), Robert, II., Sandy (David) and Debra Ann. He also has one grandson, Christopher (Hannah); two granddaughters, Hannah and Elisabeth; and one great grandson, Bowie.
Since a college tuition was beyond his reach, Robert left high school a year before his graduation and joined the military. He served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years and the U.S. Marines for two years. Some of his tours of duty included Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Camp Hansen, Okinawa; Republic of Viet-Nam; and Taipei, Taiwan. He was awarded several decorations, medals, badges and commendations for his years of service. After his military retirement, he was employed with the United States Postal Service for 25 years.
Upon his government retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, doing volunteer work, being a member of the Knights of Columbus and being an usher at the Corpus Christi Cathedral. Everyone who knew him loved him and his sociable personality. He never met a stranger and could spend hours visiting and catching up with family and friends.
Robert eventually received his high school diploma from Roy Miller High School in 2011 upon the TEA allowing school districts to issue a diploma to honorably discharged veterans who left high school before graduation to serve in World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War.
