Ruby was the fifth child born to Alvernia Willie Garcia Sr. and Gladys Hardeman Garcia on July 30, 1939. She grew up on a small farm with her seven siblings and three cousins. She graduated from Rosenwald High School in Luling Texas in 1957. After graduation she attended St. Philips College and received her LVN nursing certificate. She met her future husband, Johnny (John) Henry Clay, III, while he was stationed in Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. They were married in San Antonio in August 1959. The couple lived In Galveston Texas before moving to Corpus Christi in 1961. She began working as an LVN for Spohn Hospital in 1969 Med/Surg unit, ER and for more than 14 years in the ICU. In 1976, she began working as a school nurse with the Corpus Christi Independent School district in 1976 before retiring in 1985.
She leaves to mourn her passing her children Dr. Yolanda Y. Clay-Po, John H. Clay IV, Thomas H. Clay; her grandsons John H. Clay V, David E. Po, Jacob Clay, Joseph Shannon, Crystal Shannon Clay and her great granddaughter Amora Jon'e Clay. In addition, she leaves three sisters; Valeria Garcia Ford; Geneva Garcia Davis; Jerlene Garcia McClain and brother James Edward (Sonny) Garcia. She was preceded in death by her husband Johnny Henry Clay, III., her parents, Alvernia and Gladys Garcia, Sr.; her sisters, Majorie Garcia Crenshaw, Hattie Garcia Lamkin and brother Alvernia W. Garcia Jr (died May 2, 2020).
Services are scheduled for December 28, 2020 at 11:00 am. at Seaside Memorial Park and Funeral home Family viewing at 10:30am 4357 Ocean Drive Corpus Christi, Texas 78412 361-992-9411. Please stay home if you are over 65 to prevent the spread of Covid19.
