Vicente "Sonny" Aguilar, Jr.

July 11, 1946 ~ February 5, 2024 (age 77) 77 Years Old

Obituary

Vicente “Sonny” Aguilar, 77, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2024, after a valiant battle with melanoma.

Sonny was born in Alice, Texas on July 11, 1946 to Carmen and Vicente Aguilar, Sr. Due to his father’s unexpected passing prior to his birth, his mother single-handedly raised him and his older sister, Dolores “Lola.” They were a close-knit, faith-centered family. She instilled in them the values of love, compassion, hard work, and service. From a young age, without complaint, he worked to help support his family.

After graduating in 1964 from Alice High School, he attended The University of Corpus Christi on an academic scholarship. In 1967, he transferred to Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas, where, in tennis class, he met his forever love, Amalia “Molly” Rodriguez.

In April 1969, he enlisted in the Army National Guard. During his six years of service, he was selected to participate in an exchange program with the German Army in Lubeck, Germany.

After graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts in Government, he and Molly married on December 19, 1969. He worked briefly as a junior high History teacher and, later, as a juvenile probation officer for Jim Wells County.

In May 1973, he was hired by the United States Courts to serve as a probation officer, and he and Molly moved to Corpus Christi. In 1979, he was promoted to Supervising Probation Officer. After 27 years of service, he retired in December 2000.

Following his retirement, he was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. For several years, he also worked as a baseball chaplain for the Corpus Christi Hooks as well as an associate pastor at Real Life Fellowship. In February 2018, due to Molly’s untimely illness, he redirected and focused all of his time and energy on selflessly caring for her.

In their 54 years of marriage, Sonny and Molly built a beautiful life and raised three children, Vincent, Liza, and Melinda. He was a proud father and grandfather (“Papo”). He cherished time with his family and was happiest when surrounded by his six grandchildren. He encouraged his family to work hard and aim high. He was proud of his family’s accomplishments, always giving credit to God.

Sonny was a life-long athlete who enjoyed long-distance running, cycling, swimming, and resistance training. He valued health and fitness, and exercised daily. Sonny also loved traveling with Molly on church mission trips. He had fond memories of trips to Ghana, Belarus, Colombia, and Mexico and the friends he made.

Sonny loved baseball. He and Molly opened up their home to numerous minor league baseball players. He encouraged them in their athletic endeavors and, more importantly, in their relationship with the Lord.

He devoted his life to the Lord and is now with Him. He is loved and respected by many and will be dearly missed. We have been blessed to love and be loved by him. We will miss his wonderful sense of humor, beautiful smile, warm hugs, and constant encouragement. We celebrate that he is in the presence of God and reunited with his loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his father, Vicente Aguilar, Sr.; mother, Carmen Aguilar; sister, Dolores A. Garza; brother-in-law, Ricardo Garza; grandparents, Concepcion and Maria Franco; great-nephew, Ricardo S. Garza, III.; and, best friends, Manuel “Meme” Rios and Edward “Ed” Watson.

He is survived by his wife, Amalia “Molly” Aguilar; son, Vincent Aguilar (Deborah) of Mansfield; daughter, Liza Aguilar Wood (Michael) of Corpus Christi; daughter, Melinda Elizaldi (Ernie) of Corpus Christi; his six beloved grandchildren – Camryn Aguilar, Ryan Aguilar, Kenedy Wood, Keane Wood, Alessandra Elizaldi, and Avianna Elizaldi; and, numerous nieces and nephews whom he deeply loved.
