Vici Thomson Sheaffer, age 73, passed away in Corpus Christi, Texas on July 7, 2018. Vici was born on March 11, 1945 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Dale and Mary (Dimit) Thomson, but spent her childhood, attended high school and had many fond memories in Midland, Texas.
Vici graduated from University of Texas at Austin in 1967. After teaching for many years, Vici decided to pursue a Master’s Degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University and graduated in 1991. After graduating from UT, Vici settled in Houston and began her career teaching in 1967. In 1975, one of her best friends, Gay Caldwell, introduced her to Steven Walter Sheaffer, Sr. They had instant chemistry and were married after a brief engagement on April 4th 1975.
Vici and Steve raised their sons Steven Walter Sheaffer, Jr. and Duncan Mitchell Sheaffer (Mitch) in Humble, Texas. Throughout her life, Vici loved to travel, especially across Texas, Colorado, New Mexico and Europe. She also loved being with her sons and grandsons, spending time with her many wonderful friends and enjoying free time in Rockport, Texas where she and Steve permanently moved in 2011 and were still living at the time of Vici’s passing. During her younger years, Vici loved water and snow skiing, picking on her little brother, tubing and jumping off bridges. Later in life her passions focused on family & friends, art, tending to her plants, reading, and a cold glass of white wine. When she and Steve moved to Rockport, they worked together to decorate and appoint their wonderful home that they built together. She was ever the patient and loving spouse and supported Steve while he pursued his passion for hunting and fishing.
Vici began her teaching career in Houston Independent School District in 1967. Then in 1976, she and Steve moved to Humble, TX where Vici taught second grade at Ben Bowen Elementary School in Huffman Independent School District and later became a Reading Specialist. She loved teaching children and during her 35-year teaching career, Vici influenced thousands of children’s and parent’s lives.
Vici is survived by her beloved husband Steve; son Mitch, his wife Courtney and grandson Sam of Houston, TX; son Steven Jr., his wife Deanna and grandsons Wilson, Max, Tucker and Rush also of Houston, TX; her little brother Mark Thomson and his wife Judy of Madisonville, LA; her older sister Mary Dale Gordon and her husband Jim of Santa Fe, NM; many beloved nieces, nephews, and sisters and brothers in law, and an amazing group of lifelong friends.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Houston, 5300 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77004. The family will greet friends at a reception at the church immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in honor of Vici to The Huffman Education Foundation in recognition and respect of her dedication to childhood education and especially the school district she championed.
