William Atkins Schroeder was born on April 24, 1921 in Brooklyn, New York. He served during WWII from 1942 to 1946 as Staff Sgt. in North Africa with the 3356th Signal Service Battalion. He studied at the Chicago Musical College and received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Violin and Composition in 1947, his Masters in 1948, did Doctoral work at New York University and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

William taught at the Chicago Musical College, Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, Judson College in Marion, Alabama, Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. He was the concert master of the Wartburg Symphony and performed in other concerts. He taught at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas from 1965 to 1990 where he was chairman of the Theory Department, composer in residence and organized the yearly Contemporary Music Festivals. In the summer he taught theory and composition at the National Music Camp, Interlochen, Michigan from 1965 till 1990. William composed works for symphony, chamber orchestra, string quartet, voice, choir and band. He received the Oliver Ditson Award in 1941 for composition and the Faricy Award for Composition in 1959.

On September 2, 1952 he married Marion Claire Reese, who preceded him in death in 1997. They had three children, Suzanne Claire, Margaret Louise, and William Reese. William remarried on September 10, 2004 to Betty Brown Lancaster. He loved photography and travel. He travelled around this country with his family visiting National Parks and in the United Kingdom, Vienna, Turkey and Egypt.
William is survived by his wife Betty Schroeder, son William Reese Schroeder (Julia), daughters Suzanne Roberts (Larry) and Margaret Schroeder, grandchildren Rachael Prado (Gerald), Daryl Roberts (Christie) and Taylor Roberts, two great-grandchildren, Barrett and Brooks.

A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
