Obituary

Long time Flour Bluff resident, Winona Joyce (Swaithes) Weikum, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, July 23. Known to her loved ones and friends as Nonie, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Leonard J. Weikum. She is survived by her 4 children, John Weikum of Ewa Beach, HI, Joyce (George) Placek of Elgin, TX, Ron (Sue) Weikum of Corpus Christi, TX and Lorna (Jeff) Miller of Bartlett TN as well as 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Sterling, CO on June 28, 1930 to Alvin and Jessie Swaithes, she was the second oldest of a family of 9 children. She served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) from 1950 - 1951. Winona and Leonard Weikum were married on December 24, 1950 in Raton, NM while both were on leave from the military. Following her honorable discharge, she was a supportive military wife during her husband’s 31 year Naval career. She worked for the Navy Exchange in Corpus Christi rising from a sales clerk to a merchandise buyer during her tenure there. She then went on to open and manage the Navy Lodge before she and her husband became tenant managers for the Lost Colony condominiums in Port Aransas. Following their retirement, they returned to their Flour Bluff home and were avid sports fans of Flour Bluff High School as well as the Houston Astros.
Known for her cooking and baking, visitors to her home never found the cookie jar empty or walked away hungry. She had a great love of reading and passed that love on to her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling and creating photo albums for her family and friends to enjoy.
