Dorothy Sykora, age 95, of Corpus Christi, Texas, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 13, 2018. She was born on September 7, 1922 in Lissie, Texas, to Dora Kliem Beckman and Julius Frank Beckman.
After finishing school in Edna, Dorothy moved to Houston where she met and married Benjamin John Sykora. They had two sons: Benjamin John Sykora, Jr. and Wayne Edward Sykora.
After Dorothy and Benny divorced in 1963, she moved to Corpus Christi to live with her sister, Mary Darby. She worked as a floral designer and bookkeeper for A.C. Gilmore, Sr., at the Blossom Shop for 47 years. After she retired at age 88 and was at home for a few years, she returned to the Blossom Shop to work for A.C. Gilmore, Jr., three days a week until she retired again at age 93.
She was a devoted, hard working mother, grandmother and friend. For many years she organized 42 and Canasta games every Thursday afternoon in her home. Everyone will remember her for her fresh baked pies. She was generous with her time to help others. Baptized as an adult in the Baptist Church, she lived a Christian life, reading the Bible and praying daily. She has been an inspiration to never give up even when a person may think there is no hope.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, sister, Mary Darby, her brother, Julius Beckman, and her son, Johnny Sykora. She is survived by her son, Wayne Sykora (wife Janice) and grandchildren, Sandra Voight of Tennessee; Randy Sykora of Oregon; Julie Morreale of Portland, TX; Allegra Frank (husband Steve) of Tacoma, WA; Anthony Sykora of Corpus Christi; and two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Colton Morreale of Portland, TX.
